Horsemanship Education and Training

At Covered Call Farm, we offer unique and enriching horsemanship education for individuals and families interested in beginning or renewing their horsemanship journey.

We are not a “lesson barn.” There are many longstanding, reputable farms in Lee and the Greater Seacoast area that offer lessons and training in many different disciplines. They are much larger establishments, have small herds of experienced lesson horses, and can accommodate many students of differing riding ability and horsemanship backgrounds.

Our programs are tailored for individuals who can relate to any or all of the following:

  • You have little to no prior horsemanship experience, but have always felt drawn to and had a desire to learn about horses.
  • You may have had past horsemanship experience that did not meet your needs and you seek an alternative approach, based on natural horsemanship principles.
  • You have an interest that goes beyond just learning to “ride a horse.”
  • You seek to learn and understand how horses think, feel, act and communicate with each other and with humans.
  • You don’t have predetermined goals or expectations (i.e. I want to compete in horse shows within two years, I only want to ride English/Western).
  • You want to learn and participate in everything that goes into caring for, being with and learning about horses.
  • You believe horses and humans form relationships and work as partners in the same way that humans form partnerships with other species, such as canines and marine mammals.
  • You don’t view horses as “machines” who should be made to work without regard to welfare, environment or their needs as horses.
  • You are at least 10 years of age.

Our horsemanship education program incorporates the following core areas:

  • Biomechanics of Horse and Rider: How Horses Move and How We Move with Them
  • Horse and Rider Fitness
  • Understanding the Horse and Herd Behavior: What They Think, Feel and Do, and Why
  • The Language of Equus: How Horses and Humans Read and Respond to Energy and Body
  • Language
  • Basic First Aid, Care and Feeding
  • Groundwork, In-Hand and Working at Liberty
  • Preparing for Horse Ownership

**The horsemanship education program is also available as a private instructional option and can be tailored to individual needs.

Testimonials

"One of the best bucket list experiences I have had recently was the hands-on horsemanship classes at Covered Call Farm. Totally out of my comfort zone as an older adult , Adrienne and Kati were so welcoming & knowledgeable I loved every minute of it. If you’re curious and love being around horses, I highly recommend this program! It was such a great foundation for me to learn and respect the horse behavior before I start riding lessons and volunteering at my favorite rescue. From basic horse care to body language and handling, all while being hands-on, was such an amazing experience! Thank you all so much!"
